Summary of the case: On Friday the 31st of May 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 60 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Tripoli the previous evening on a rubber boat. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. After our initial call, the connection was so bad that we never managed to get an updated position from the boat or clear news about their situation. Later, we learned from a relative that the travellers were rescued by a merchant vessel and brought to Lampedusa. Sadly, the relative told us that one person had died during the rescue operation.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
