Summary of the case: On Monday the 15th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 46 travellers, including four children and nine women, three of them pregnant, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sfax the previous evening on an iron boat. We were not able to establish direct contact to the boat and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. In the evening we managed to reach the travellers who told us that they had been intercepted by the Tunisian coastguard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
