Summary of the Case: In the afternoon of the 9th of April 2024, a relative alerted the Alarmphone shift team to a boat in distress in the Central Mediterranean. The boat had started on the 7th of April from Sfax in Tunisia. They were 51 people on the iron boat, including one baby, two kids, one minor and 10 women. The shift team did not manage to reach the travellers but immediately relayed all the information to the Italian and Maltese authorities. As we have not been able to reach the travellers anymore and the also the authorities refused to give any information, the fate of these people remains unknown to this day.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
