Summary of the case: On Friday the 17th of December 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 35 travellers, 15 men, 20 women and three children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sfax, Tunisia around midnight the previous day on a blue wooden boat. They were heading towards Lampedusa. We were not able to reach the travellers and get their GPS position, but we forwarded the information we had to the relevant rescue authorities. Later in the day, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO vessel Sea Eye 4, operated by the organisation Sea Eye.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
