Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 29th of May 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 45 travellers, including one woman, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sfax at around midnight on the 28th of May on an iron boat. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned that the Tunisian coastguard had intercepted a boat matching the description we had received. We were not able to reach the travellers to confirm this outcome but assume that they were intercepted.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
