Summary of the case: On Monday the 18th of March 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 47 travellers, including four women, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sfax shortly after midnight on a black rubber boat. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned from the relative that the boat had been intercepted by the Tunisian coastguard and that the travellers were deported to the desert.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
