Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 12th of June 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 19 travellers, including one woman, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Garabouli, Libya, at around midnight on a white fiberglass boat. Online we could see that there was strong winds in the area. We were not able to reach the boat and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Through the relative we later got their position and immediately forwarded it to the authorities. Later, we learned that the travellers had been intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
