Summary of the Case: In the evening of the 28th of March 2024, a relative alerted the Alarmphone shift team to a boat in distress in the Central Mediterranean. The boat had started from Tajura near Tripoli, Libya. There were 110 people on the boat. The shift team managed to reach the travellers, who were asking for urgent rescue, and immediately relayed all the information to the so-called Libyan coast guard. Later we learned that the boat had been intercepted by the so-called Libyan coast guard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
