Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations 7th June 2024Case name: 2024_06_07-CM157
Situation: Around 55 travellers in distress in the Central Med, probably rescued to Lampedusa.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Friday the 7th of June 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of around 55 travellers, including women and children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Libya on a grey fiberglass boat. The relative told us that the boat was drifting as their engine was no longer working, and gave us their GPS position. We immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We passed on updated positions from the boat as often as possible, showing that they were drifting close to Lampedusa. They were most likely rescued to Lampedusa, though we were not able to obtain a final confirmation of this from the travellers or their relative.
