Summary of the case: On Thursday the 11th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 60 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They were travelling on a fiberglass boat. We were not able to obtain a lot of information about the boat, but managed to get their GPS position. We then immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities to the distress, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and could follow as they moved in to the Italian territorial waters. We relayed their updated positions as well as updates about the situation onboard to the authorities as often as possible. Later, we learned that a boat matching the description we had been given had arrived to Lampedusa. Although we were not able to reach the travellers again to confirm this, we assume that they arrived to the island.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
