Case name: 2024_05_29-CM146
Situation: 130 travellers in distress in the Central Med, rescued by NGO vessel Sea Punk 1.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean

Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 29th of May 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 130 travellers, including 10 women, 10 children and three babies, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sabratha, Libya, at around midnight on a blue wooden boat. According to the relative they had no more drinking water and five people had fallen overboard and were not wearing life vests. We were not able to establish direct contact to the boat, but the relative gave us their position from earlier in the afternoon. We then immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Not long after, we managed to reach the travellers who told us that water was entering their boat. We received their updated position and passed it on to the authorities. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the search and rescue NGO vessel Sea Punk 1.

  • Border police patrols

While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33). • Exclusive Economic Zone

Maritime area beyond and adjacent to the territorial sea in which the coastal state exercises sovereign rights for the purposes of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources, whether living or non-living, the seabed and its subsoil and the superjacent waters.
