Summary of the case: On Saturday the 12th of February 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team received a direct call from a group of around 100 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers told us that they had no more food or drinking water and that their boat was taking in water. We managed to get their GPS position, and immediately alerted all relevant search and rescue authorities. We stayed in contact with the boat and relayed their updated GPS position to the authorities when possible. From talking to the travellers on the phone, we could hear how the panic onboard increased. In the evening, the travellers were rescued by the rescue NGO vessel Ocean Viking operated by Doctors without Borders.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
