Case name: 2024_01_17-CM015
Situation: 90 travellers in distress in the Central med, rescued by search and rescue NGO vessel Humanity 1.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean

Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 17th of January 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 90 travellers, including 15 women and 15 children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sabratha on a blue wooden boat. We got their GPS position from the relative and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We later managed to reach the travellers and forwarded positions and updates about the situation from the boat to authorities as often as possible. Early the following morning the travellers told us that their engine had stopped working and that they were drifting and that the boat started taking in water. In our next call to the travellers they told us that people had fallen overboard and that they doubted they could survive much longer.
Later we learned that the travellers were rescued by the civil search and rescue vessel Humanity 1.

  • Border police patrols

While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
