Summary of the case: On Saturday the 15th of June 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 42 travellers, including seven women and six children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sfax the previous afternoon. We were not able to reach the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We were never able to establish contact to the boat or get any information from authorities about matching rescues. In the end we had to close the case without knowing what happened to the boat.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
