Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Monday the 6th of May 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of around 60 travellers, including four women and four children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zuwara the day before in the early afternoon on a blue wooden boat. They told us that they had no more fuel left and were therefore drifting. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We learned that none of the travellers were wearing life vests and that the boat was close to capsizing with water entering. We later learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO vessel Nadir. They had recovered all travellers, including one dead body and two unconscious people. They brought everyone to Lampedusa. Our thoughts and solidarity are with the family and friends of the person who died during the crossing as well as with all the other travellers who had to endure this traumatic experience.
