Summary of the case: On Monday the 22nd of November 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 22 travellers, 11 men, 10 women and a baby, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sfax, Tunisia, in the evening of the 20th on a wooden boat. The relative had lost contact to the boat the previous evening at 21.00 CET. We were not able to reach the travellers, but forwarded all the information we had to the relevant rescue authorities. Throughout the day we continued to try reaching the travellers without success. The following morning the Tunisian coastguard confirmed that they had intercepted the boat and brought the travellers back to Tunisia.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
