Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations 24th February 2024Case name: 2024_02_24-CM046
Situation: 69 travellers in distress in the Central Med, fate unknown.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Saturday the 24th of February 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 69 travellers, including four women and three children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sabratha on a blue wooden boat. The travellers told us that they were drifting as their engine had broken, and that none of them were wearing life vests. According to the travellers, two people onboard had died. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We then lost contact to the travellers and were never able to reach them again. For the following days we attempted to get an answer from authorities to whether they had any news about the whereabouts of the travellers but to no avail. Eventually, we were forced to close the case without knowing the fate of the travellers.
