Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 24th January 2022Case name: 2022_01_24-CM018
Situation: Around 280 travellers in distress in the Central Med, seven people found dead on the boat, the rest rescued to Lampedusa by the Italian coastguard.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Monday the 24th of January 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of around 280 travellers, including almost 50 children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zuwara the previous evening on a wooden fishing vessel. We managed to reach the travellers, who told us that one child was injured and another unconscious. They gave us their GPS position, showing that they were in Maltese waters. We relayed this, together with all other information we had, to the relevant rescue authorities. The following day we learned that the boat had been rescued by the Italian coastguard and brought to Lampedusa. We also learned that seven of the travellers had been found dead onboard the wooden boat, probably from hypothermia.
