Summary of the Case: In the first hours of the 9th of April 2024, a relative alerted the Alarmphone shift team to a boat in distress in the Central Mediterranean. The boat had started on the 8th of April from Tunisia. The number of people on the boat was unknown. The shift team did not manage to reach the travellers but relayed all the information to the Italian and Maltese authorities. Until the 11th of April, the people on the boat could still not be reached and that the authorities did not give any information. The fate of the people on this boat remains unknown to this day.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
