Summary of the case: On Saturday the 16th of March 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of around 60 travellers, including five women and five children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They were travelling on a wooden boat. The travellers told us that they had no more fuel left. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and forwarded their updated positions as well as information about the situation onboard to authorities as often as possible. During the night, we lost contact to the travellers. In the morning we learned that a boat matching the description we had received had arrived to Lampedusa. However, we were not able to confirm their arrival.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
