Summary of the Case: In the afternoon of the 29th of March 2024, a relative alerted the Alarmphone shift team to a boat in distress in the Central Mediterranean. The boat had started on the 29th of march from Sfax, Tunisia. There were 42 people on the boat, including three women and one child. The shift team did not manage to reach the travellers but immediately relayed all the information to the Italian, Maltese and Lampedusa authorities. Later we learned that the people have safely reached Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
