Summary of the case: On Friday the 26th of April 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 47 travellers, including three women and two children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sfax, Tunisia, the same day on an iron boat. We were not able to establish direct contact to the boat and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. The following morning the relative sent us the position of the travellers and informed us that their engine had stopped working. We forwarded this information to the relevant authorities. Later, the Tunisian coastguard informed us that they had picked up the travellers.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
