Summary of the case:

On Thursday the 2nd of September 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 22 travellers, including one child, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left three days previously from Tunisia. We called the Tunisian coastguard and learned that they had not rescued a boat matching this description. We attempted to reach the travellers many times, and at 02.00 CEST the following morning we received a message from the travellers informing us that they had been rescued by Tunisian fishermen after three days at sea and were back in Tunisia.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
