Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 28th January 2022Case name: 2022_01_28-CM021
Situation: Around 30 travellers in distress in the Central Med, probably intercepted by the Tunisian coastguard.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Friday the 28th of January 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of around 30 travellers, including two children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sfax in the evening of the 26th on a blue fishing boat. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers and get their GPS position, but we immediately relayed the information we had to the relevant rescue authorities. None of the authorities had any information about what had happened to the travellers, and insisted that they could not commence a search and rescue operation without having the exact GPS position of the boat. The following day, we learned that the Tunisian coastguard had intercepted a boat with a similar number of travellers as the one we had been alerted to. However, we were not able to confirm in any other way that this was indeed the same boat. We hope that the travellers arrived safely to land.
