Summary of the case: On Saturday the 21st of September 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 12 travellers, all men, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from Bouznika, between Rabat and Casablanca, and were heading towards mainland Spain. They had left at around 3am the day before on a white rubber boat. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. The following day we learned from the relative that the travellers had been rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Spain.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
