Summary of the case: On Sunday the 30th of July 2023, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of travellers in distress on their way from Casablanca to mainland Spain. The travellers had left the previous day, and according to the relative they were close to Tarifa at the time they alerted the Alarm Phone. However, we did not have their GPS position and were not able to establish direct contact to the boat. We immediately relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. Later the same day, we learned that the travellers had been intercepted by the Moroccan navy and brought back to Morocco.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
