Summary of the case: On Thursday the 19th of September 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 57 travellers, including seven women, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from Tan Tan on a black rubber boat at around midnight. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers but from the relative we managed to get their GPS position. We then immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had.
The following day we learned from Salvamento Maritimo that they had rescued the boat and brought the travellers to Lanzarote.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
