Case name: 2024_08_27-WM022
Situation: 12 travellers in distress in the Western Med, two missing after shipwreck, 10 rescued to Spain
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean

Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 27th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 12 travellers, including one woman, in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left in the early morning of the 23rd of August from Mostaganem, Algeria, on a blue and white fiberglass boat. We were not able to establish direct contact and did not know their exact position. However, we immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. We never managed to reach the travellers but stayed in touch with their relatives who grew increasing worried as time passed. Later, we learned that the boat had capsized close to the coast of Cartagena. 10 travellers were rescued and brought to Spain where five were hospitalised. Two people remained missing.

  • Exclusive Economic Zone

Maritime area beyond and adjacent to the territorial sea in which the coastal state exercises sovereign rights for the purposes of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources, whether living or non-living, the seabed and its subsoil and the superjacent waters. Its breadth is 200 nautical miles from the straight baselines from which the territorial sea is measured (UNCLOS, Arts. 55, 56 and 57). • Frontex operations

Frontex has, in the past few years, carried out several sea operations at the maritime borders of the EU. The blue shapes indicate the approximate extend of these operations. Data source: Migreurop Altas.
