Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 25th of December 2023
Case name: 2023_12_25-WM086
Situation: One boat with 17 travellers that left from Algier has been rescued and brought to Spain
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean

Summary of the Case: On the 25th of December, a relative informed the Alarmphone about a boat that had left from Algier, Algeria, at 05.00 CET on the 23rd of December, heading towards Ibiza. The boat was carrying 17 people, from which two were women. Unfortunately, the Alarmphone shift team never managed to reach the people on the boat directly. For two days, the Alarmphone shift team tried to find out about the fate of this boat by calling different Spanish authorities like the national police, local police stations, the Guardia Civil and the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, who all could not provide any exact information that was matching what we knew from the relative. Finally, on the 29th of December, we learned from the relative that the travellers had been rescued on their way to Ibiza and have reached Spain. We learned as well that all the people on the boat were fine.
