Situation: 13 travellers in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea on their way from Algeria, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Benidorm, Spain.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean
Summary On Sunday the 28th of September 2021 the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 13 travellers in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Alger two days before, on 26th of September 2021 at around 04.00 CEST on a blue rubber boat. We were never able to establish direct contact to the boat, and the relative had no more information about the location of the boat or the situation onboard. At 09.02 CEST we sent an email to the relevant rescue authorities, forwarding everything we knew about the distress case. The following evening the relatives confirmed that they had spoken to the travellers who had been rescued by the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Benidorm where they were all safe.
