Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 10th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 19 travellers in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Temsamane in the early hours of the morning on a blue fiberglass boat. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers and did not have their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo to the distress situation, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned that the travellers had been intercepted by the Moroccan navy.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
