Summary of the case: On Thursday the 4th of May 2023, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 30 travellers, all men, in distress in the Alboran Sea. The travellers had left from around Nador in the evening of the 2nd of May. Neither we nor the relative were able to reach the travellers. However, we immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had.
The following day we learned that the travellers had been rescued and brought to Motril.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
