Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations 7th March 2024Case name: 2024_03_07-CM051
Situation: 50 travellers in distress in the Central Med, intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Thursday the 7th of March 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 50 travellers, including seven women and six children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zuwara in the morning of the 5th of March on a blue wooden boat. The travellers told us that their engines had broken and they were drifting. We managed to get their GPS positions and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and forwarded their updated positions to the authorities as often as possible. As the coastguards did not give us any information about ongoing efforts to rescue the travellers, we additionally contacted nearby merchant vessels. During the night, we lost contact to the boat. The following day we learned that the travellers had been intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.
