Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 19th of January 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of around 100 travellers, including seven women and four children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zuwara the same morning at around 01.00 CET on a grey wooden boat. We managed to reach the travellers and get their GPS position. They told us that water was entering their boat. We alerted all relevant rescue authorities to the distress of the travellers. In the early hours the following morning we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO vessel Mare Jonio.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
