Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 28th of May 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 25 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They were travelling on a blue rubber boat. We managed to reach the travellers who told us that many people onboard were sick and that the boat was taking in water. We could hear on the phone that they were panicking. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and passed on their updated positions to the authorities as often as possible. We then lost contact to the travellers. Later, we learned that the so-called Libyan coastguard had intercepted several boats in the area, and that this boat most probably was among those intercepted. However, we were not able to receive a final confirmation of this outcome.
