Summary of the Case: On the 12th of February 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a boat of 12 people, from which all were men, that has departed from Tipaza, Algeria, in the evening of the 11th of February. The people were reported to be travelling in a wooden boat. Unfortunately, the Alarm Phone shift team didn’t manage to establish direct contact to the people but immediately relayed all the relevant information to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. Later in the same afternoon, the shift team learnt from the relative that the people had returned on their own to Algeria as they had been facing bad weather conditions.

Border police patrols

In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
