Summary of the Case: On the 08th of November 2023, a relative informed Alarmphone about a group of six travellers in the Western Mediterranean. The group had left Tazaghine, Morocco, in the early morning of the same day in a small rubber boat. The shift team relayed all the information to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo and tried to get in touch with the travellers throughout the night and the next day but could not establish contact. In the evening of the 9th of November, the relative informed the shift team that the travellers had all arrived on a beach in Motril, Spain.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
