Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations - 16th of February 2018

Case name: 2018_02_16-WM206
Situation: Alarm Phone alerted to boat with 34 persons who left from Bouyafar/Morocco, rescued to Motril/Spain
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean Sea

Summary of the Case: On Friday the 16th of February 2018 at 4.55pm, contact persons informed the Alarm Phone about a boat in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea with 34 persons on board, including 7 women and 3 children, who had started from Bouyafar, close to Nador/Morocco, at 6am. Contact to the boat had broken up at 9am. They provided us with the travellers' phone number and we tried to call the boat at 4.57pm but did not reach it. At 5.20pm, we learned via Facebook that two boats which had left from Nador on that day had been rescued to Motril/Spain. In order to verify if the boat we had been alerted to was among them, we called the Spanish rescue organization Salvamento Maritimo (S.M.) in Alméria at 5.33pm. S.M. confirmed to us that the phone with the given phone number had indeed been rescued to Mortil and everyone was fine.
