Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 31th of October 2023
Case name: 2023_10_31-WM068
Situation: 15 travellers were rescued by Salvamento Maritimo after they had left from Temsamane
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean Sea

Summary of the Case: On the 31th of October, a relative alerted the Alarm Phone shift team to a group of travellers in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The group of around 15 travellers, including a child, had left from Temsamane earlier that morning and could not be reached since a little while after they left. The shift team relayed all the information to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. Later that day, Salvamento Maritimo informed the shift team that the Moroccan navy might have intercepted this boat but it did not match to the information the shift teams got from the relative. On the 1st of November, the shift team learned that the 15 travellers had been rescued by Salvamento Maritimo.

While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
