Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 28th of May 2023

Case name: 2023_05_28-WM038

Situation: 22 travellers in distress in the Alboran Sea, rescued to Spain.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean Sea

Summary of the case: On Sunday the 28th of May 2023, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 22 travellers, all men, in distress in the Alboran Sea. The travellers had left from Nador the previous morning, heading towards Isla de Alboran. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers, but immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. We were not able to obtain news about the travellers whereabouts from Spanish authorities or the Red Cross.
Only days later did we get the information from the Spanish national police that a boat matching the description we had provided had been rescued to Spain. One traveller had been transferred to the hospital in Almeria, the remaining 21 travellers had been brought to Motril.
