Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 1st of November 2022

Case name: 2022_11_01-WM071

Situation: 12 travellers departed from Tipaza, Algeria likely rescued by Salvamento Marítimo to Torrevieja

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean Sea

Summary of the Case: On November 1st, 2022, the Alarm Phone was contacted by a concerned relative about a boat travelling from Tipaza, Algeria at 3:00 local time on November 1st. They informed us that the travellers were near Benidorm but had a broken engine. Unable to establish contact with the boat directly, the Alarm Phone notified the Spanish search and rescue organization Salvamento Marítimo (SM) with the information provided by the relatives. The following day, the Alarm Phone contacted several local SM branches to learn if the rescue had been performed but were unable to confirm directly with the Spanish authorities that the travellers had been found. Later, we found a newspaper article describing the rescue by SM of 12 travellers to Torrevieja, which we assumed to be the people in distress we were informed about.
