Summary of the case: On Saturday the 10th of September 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of six travellers in distress in the Alboran Sea. The travellers had left the previous day from around Nador at around midday on a blue wooden boat. We were not able to reach the boat but immediately relayed the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. We continued trying to reach the travellers, but never managed. The following day, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Motril.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
