Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 21st October 2022Case name: 2022_10_21-WM063
Situation:
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean Sea
Summary of the case: On Friday the 21st of October 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 30 travellers, including one woman and two children, in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left Al Hoceima at around 07.00 CEST the previous morning on a green boat. We were not able to reach the travellers, but immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo to the distress case, relaying all the information we had. Through the relative we were able to get updated positions from the boat which we forwarded to Salvamento Maritimo. A few hours after our initial alert, we could see online that a merchant vessel was very close to the last position we had received from the travellers. The relative told us that the merchant vessel would stand by until Salvamento Maritimo arrived and that the crew had distributed food to the travellers. In the early morning Salvamento Maritimo informed us that the travellers had all been rescued and were being brought to Motril.
