Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 28th October 2021Case name: 2021_10_28-WM768
Situation: Nine travellers in distress in the Western Med, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Motril.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean
Summary: On Thursday the 28th of October 2021 just before midnight, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of nine travellers, including two minors, in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left around 24 hours earlier from around Temsamane on a rubber boat. We were not immediately able to establish direct contact to the travellers, but forwarded the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. After trying all night, at 09.00 CEST we finally managed to reach the travellers. They told us that they were close to Motril, that they could see land and that two boats were nearby. However, they could not reach land by themselves as engine had stopped working.
After this, we could no longer reach the travellers. The relative later confirmed that they had been rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and would be brought to Motril.
