Case name: 2022_09_27_Eastern Med_1019

Situation: Pushback of group to Turkish island

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Aegean Sea

Summary of the Case: On 27th of September 2022 at 10am CEST, we received an alert from relatives about 40 people in distress at sea not too far from Lepsi island in Greece. The relatives sent us a video of the group screaming for help. We immediately alerted the Greek and Turkish authorities by phone. We then emailed the Greek authorities with the position and alerted them to the situation again. Shortly after we received an updated position, showing that some of the group are stuck on the Turkish island Tavsan Adasi. We immediately emailed the Turkish authorities of this update, and later received confirmation by phone from the Turkish Coast Guard that the group were found and taken back to Turkey. Local Turkish media shows that 27 people were found on Tavsan Adasi, it is unclear what happened to others from the group.
