Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 9th of March 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 56 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from Laayoune at 03.00 CET the same morning, heading towards the Canary Islands. We were not able to establish direct contact to the boat nor to find out their location as they did not carry a satellite phone with them. However, we could see that the weather conditions were very bad in the area. We called the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo and relayed the information we had. They informed us that they had just carried out a rescue operation of a boat matching the description we provided. Soon after, the relative confirmed that the travellers had been rescued by Salvamento Maritimo.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
