Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 26th January 2022Case name: 2022_01_26-ATL020
Situation: 55 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Lanzarote.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Wednesday the 26th of January 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 55 travellers, 32 men, 17 women, of which three pregnant, and six children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from close to Boujdour the evening before on a blue rubber boat, heading towards the Canary Islands. We were never able to establish direct contact to the boat, nor to get their GPS position. However, we forwarded the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. In the late evening, however, the boat had still not been found and Salvamento Maritimo told us that they were pausing the search during the night. The following day we learned from Spanish media that a boat matching the description we had been given had been rescued to Lanzarote. Later, the relative confirmed that they had spoken to the travellers and that they had arrived well.
