Situation: 53 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, probably arrived to Fuerteventura.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea.
Summary: On Friday the 17th of December 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 53 travellers, 44 men and nine women, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from Laayoune the previous night on a black and white rubber boat, heading towards the Canary Islands. We were not able to reach the travellers, but forwarded all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. For several days we were unable to reach the travellers. Due to the high number of search and rescue operations in the area during those days, it was not possible for Salvamento Maritimo to confirm the rescue of the travellers. However, through Spanish media we learned that a boat matching the description we had been given by the relative had arrived to Fuerteventura.
