Situation: 53 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, arrived by themselves to Fuerteventura
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Monday the 18th of October 2021 in the late evening, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a boat in distress in the Atlantic Sea. Onboard were 53 travellers, 43 men and 10 women. The travellers had left from Laayoune around 24 hours previously, heading towards the Canary Islands. The relative had last spoken to the boat at 10.00 CEST, and our shift team did not manage to reach the travellers, despite many attempts. Just after midnight we alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo to the distress of the travellers, forwarding all the information we had. They confirmed that they were searching for the boat. Days later, we learned from the relative that the travellers had arrived by themselves to Fuerteventura.
