Summary: On Saturday the 12th of February 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 19 travellers in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left in the early hours of the morning from Al Hoceima on a green polyester boat, heading towards Motril. We were not able to reach the travellers directly, but relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. The following morning, Salvamento Maritimo confirmed to us that they had rescued a boat matching the description we had given. Later in the day, the relative also confirmed that the travellers had been rescued and brought to Malaga.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
